How it's built & how it sounds
A Major is the reference scale every other scale is measured against (mode 1, “Ionian”). What makes it different: Nothing — this is the ruler. Every other scale on this site is described by how it differs from the major scale. Its step pattern is W–W–H–W–W–W–H, and starting on C it lands on the white keys: C–D–E–F–G–A–B.
The sound: Bright, resolved, “at home”. The default happy sound of Western music. Where you'll hear it: Most pop, folk, country and classical music; the default major-key sound and the foundation of all the modes.

What's a good bass fingering for A Major?
Play it as a one-octave pattern in a single position. Bass frets are wide, so most players use a 1–2–4 (index–middle–pinky) fingering low on the neck and switch to one-finger-per-fret from around the 5th fret up. Start from the lowest A shown — which is an open string in some keys. That one-position pattern is the same in every key, so you can slide it to a new root; patterns that use open strings are the exception and don't slide.
