W–W–1½–W–1½ — W is a whole step (two frets), H a half step (one fret), and 1½ a step and a half (three frets). Start on any Con the neck, walk that pattern up one string, and you've played C Major Pentatonic.
How it's built
C Major Pentatonic is a five-note scale (not a mode). What makes it different: The major scale with its two clash-prone notes — the 4th and the 7th — removed. Five notes remain: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
It's carved straight out of the major scale: same notes, minus the 4th and 7th. That's why anything you play in it fits the parent key automatically.

The sound: Open, bright and singable. With no half-steps left in the scale, there are no “wrong” notes against a major chord.
