Why it works

Hallelujah is a masterclass in doing a lot with the four “everyday” chords of a key: I, IV, V and vi (C, F, G, Am).

The famous line spells out the moves: the minor fall is the drop to Am (vi), and the major lift is the rise to F (IV). That gentle fall-and-lift is the whole emotional engine.
